At Aerospace Tech Week, Rene de Vogel, Boeing Global Services Digital Solutions & Analytics Lab Frankfurt joined to discuss the connected ecosystem. Unpacking the changing scope of connected aircraft and the factors restricting progress, de Vogel shared his insights on how the integration of new airspace users and evolving legislations are shaping the future of connectivity.
Acknowledging that the path to full connectivity comes with its challenges, de Vogel noted that legislation typically lags behind tech advancement and retrofitting is both costly and time-consuming. Commenting on what could be holding back the ecosystem from enjoying the full benefits of existing technology, he added:
“Like I mentioned, we have a lot of new users in the in the airspace, I think legislation is not really up to speed – as in most areas in aviation it’s always lagging behind so that is holding us back. I think investment for the airlines are holding holding it back as well – it it is not easy to retrofit an existing fleet […] sometimes take years before a whole fleet is adapted to a solution and [the airline] can take the full benefits of that investment. So I think that is combination of things.”
That being said, the industry is slowly progressing and de Vogel anticipates significant advancement in the next two to three years. However, he warned it may take around a decade to see the technology available today fully in operation.
