At Aerospace Tech Week, Asteris Apostolidis, Senior Lead, Technical Innovation & Emerging Technologies at KLM Royal Dutch Airlines joined for a conversation on innovation, data, and impactful technologies. During the five-minute discussion, Apostolidis shared his thoughts on the power of “trustworthy AI” for the safety critical sector, explaining its role in pushing towards a more sustainable, efficient future.
Selecting AI as “the most impactful technology” of the moment, Apostolidis described certified or trustworthy AI as critical for supporting the industry’s transition to a sustainable future. However, Apostolidis also acknowledged that aerospace is traditionally a very conservative industry, navigating a delicate balance between innovation and safety.
Looking at the current challenges surrounding data sharing, Apostolidis described them as a major barrier to innovation. Explaining his involvement with initiatives like the Independent Data Consortium for Aviation (IDCA), Apostolidis said:
“We develop the standards and the governance to facilitate data sharing among parties with shared interest. These parties might be allies or they might be competitors but of course combining data to improve your safety or improve your predictive capabilities when it comes to maintenance, for example, that’s something that everyone wants […] So we try different things to facilitate data sharing because we see that the end goal is worth making this effort.”
